Target Information
Cytokeratin 19 is part of a subfamily of intermediate filament proteins characterized by biochemical diversity, represented in human epithelial tissues by at least 20 different polypeptides. Cytokeratins range in molecular weight from 40–68 kDa and have isoelectric points between 4.9–7.8.
Each human cytokeratin is numbered 1 to 20, and their expression patterns are characteristic of epithelial type and differentiation stage. Cytokeratin subtype expression is useful in distinguishing various epithelial malignancies.
Cytokeratin antibodies assist in differential diagnosis of tumors via immunohistochemistry and are also used in cytopathology and flow cytometry. Cytokeratin 19 is not expressed in hepatocytes, thus useful for identifying liver metastasis.
