Target Information
Alpha 2-Macroglobulin (A2M) is an approximately 720-kDa homotetrameric glycoprotein composed of four identical ~180 kDa subunits. It shares structural similarity with other alpha-macroglobulins such as complement components C3 and C4 and pregnancy zone protein (PZP), possessing an extraordinary binding capacity for various ligands. This enables alpha-macroglobulins to act as humoral defense barriers against foreign peptides in plasma.
Alpha 2M interacts and captures virtually any proteinase, functioning as a panprotease inhibitor. In Alzheimer’s disease (AD) patients, Alpha 2M has been localized to diffuse amyloid plaques, suggesting an important role in AD pathogenesis.
