Target Information

Smooth Muscle Actin belongs to the actin family of highly conserved proteins involved in cell motility, structure, and integrity.
Alpha, beta, and gamma actin isoforms have been identified:

• Alpha actin: major component of the contractile apparatus
• Beta and gamma actins: involved in regulation of cell motility

Smooth muscle actin is an alpha actin found in skeletal muscle and is a key component of the cytoskeleton, interacting with myosin to assist in muscle contraction, cell motility, and cytokinesis.
It is abundant in vascular and visceral smooth muscle cells and appears in fibroblastic stress fibers during wound healing and fibrocontractive diseases.
Defects in the smooth muscle actin gene can cause familial thoracic aortic aneurysm type 6.
Multiple alternatively spliced variants of smooth muscle actin have been identified.
