Target Information
TNF alpha is a multifunctional proinflammatory cytokine belonging to the tumor necrosis factor (TNF) superfamily. It is mainly secreted by macrophages and binds to receptors TNFRSF1A/TNFR1 and TNFRSF1B/TNFBR. TNF alpha regulates immune cells, cell proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, lipid metabolism, and coagulation.
It typically appears as a single 17 kDa band under non-reducing SDS-PAGE conditions and functions as a multimer. Knockout studies in mice suggest neuroprotective roles, and it induces tumor necrosis when injected into tumor-bearing mice. TNF alpha plays roles in immune responses to bacterial, viral, parasitic, and fungal infections and is implicated in autoimmune diseases, insulin resistance, and cancer.
