Target Information
Regulatory subunit of the condensin complex, required for conversion of interphase chromatin into mitotic-like condensed chromosomes. The condensin complex introduces positive supercoils into relaxed DNA and converts nicked DNA into positive knotted forms. It may target the condensin complex to DNA via its C-terminal domain and promote resolution of double-strand DNA catenanes between sister chromatids. Condensin-mediated compaction increases tension in catenated sister chromatids, aiding topoisomerase-mediated strand exchanges toward chromatid decatenation. Required for decatenation of non-centromeric ultrafine DNA bridges during anaphase. In neurogenesis, plays an essential role in accurate mitotic chromosome condensation in neuron stem cells, affecting neuron pool and cortex size. [UniProt]
