Target Information
The FADS3 gene encodes a member of the fatty acid desaturase (FADS) family. These enzymes regulate fatty acid unsaturation by introducing double bonds into fatty acyl chains. FADS proteins consist of an N-terminal cytochrome b5-like domain and a C-terminal desaturase domain characterized by conserved histidine motifs.
This gene is located in a cluster with FADS1 and FADS2 at 11q12–q13.1, thought to have evolved through gene duplication due to similar exon/intron organization.
