Target Information
The Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome family of proteins share similar domain structures and are involved in signal transduction from cell surface receptors to the actin cytoskeleton. These proteins interact with multiple partners and are regulated by various stimuli. They associate with small GTPase Cdc42 and the Arp2/3 complex, which regulate actin filament formation.
Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome is a rare, inherited, X-linked recessive disease characterized by immune dysregulation and microthrombocytopenia, caused by mutations in the WAS gene. The WAS gene product is expressed exclusively in hematopoietic cells and is associated with signaling and cytoskeletal abnormalities in affected patients. A transcript variant with an alternative promoter and different 5’ UTR has been described, though its full-length nature remains unknown.
