Target Information
CD14 is a 55 kDa GPI-anchored glycoprotein expressed on mature monocytes, macrophages, and neutrophils. It functions as a multifunctional lipopolysaccharide receptor, existing in both membrane-bound and soluble forms. CD14 interacts with lipopolysaccharide-binding protein (LBP) to recognize and neutralize bacterial lipopolysaccharides. Soluble CD14 (sCD14) can detect subtle structural variations in LPS and plays a role in immune modulation. It also binds apoptotic cells and is involved in allergic, inflammatory, and infectious processes. Alternative splicing produces multiple transcript variants of the same isoform. CD14 dysfunction is associated with mycobacterium chelonae infection and Croup.
