PLA2G2A는 phospholipase A2(PLA2) 계열에 속하는 효소로, 다양한 서열·기능·위치·이온 요구조건을 가진 효소 군에 속합니다. Group II에 속하는 이 단백질은 분비형 PLA2로, 낮은 분자량의 세포외 효소이며 칼슘 이온을 필요로 합니다. 이 효소는 phosphoglycerides의 sn-2 지방산 에스터 결합을 가수분해하여 자유 지방산과 lysophospholipid를 방출하며, 생체막 내 인지질 대사 조절에 관여하는 것으로 알려져 있습니다. 여러 가지 5’ UTR을 가진 대체 스플라이싱 전사체 변이도 보고되었습니다.
