Target Information
Neurofilaments (NFs) are intermediate filaments expressed almost exclusively in neuronal cells, particularly in large axons. They consist of three polypeptide chains—NF-M (medium), NF-H (high), and NF-L (light)—that share a coiled-coil core domain but differ in terminal sequences. NF-M plays a crucial role in maintaining axonal size and cytoskeletal architecture through its phosphorylated tail domain. Phosphorylation and O-GlcNAcylation of NF-M are reciprocally regulated, influencing filament formation and function. Antibodies against neurofilament subunits are valuable neuronal markers due to their abundance, neuron-specific expression, and biochemical stability.
