Target Information
ZEB2, initially identified as Smad interacting-protein 1, is a nuclear DNA-binding transcriptional repressor that interacts with activated SMADs. Similar to ZEB1, ZEB2 inhibits E-cadherin gene transcription and induces epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), a process regulating cell migration during embryonic development and wound healing. ZEB2 can also protect cells from DNA damage-induced apoptosis, suggesting a role in tumor progression. It is frequently observed in the cytoplasm of various cancers, indicating regulation of its localization. Mutations in ZEB2 are associated with Hirschsprung disease and Mowat-Wilson syndrome.
