Auxin response factors (ARFs) are transcription factors that bind to auxin response elements in promoters of early auxin response genes and play central roles in many auxin-mediated processes.
ARFs possess a modular structure with three major domains:

1. Amino-terminal DNA-binding domain (DBD)
2. Middle domain – responsible for gene activation or repression
3. Carboxy-terminal PB1 (Phox and Bem1) domain, previously known as domain III/I

ARFs function as transcription activators or repressors depending on their middle region:

• Q-rich regions: activate transcription
• P/S/T-rich regions: confer repressor activity
