Target Information
This gene encodes a member of a family of candidate taste receptors that belong to the G protein-coupled receptor superfamily, specifically expressed by taste receptor cells of the tongue and palate epithelia. These intronless genes encode 7-transmembrane receptor proteins functioning as bitter taste receptors. The TAS2R4 gene is clustered with three other candidate taste receptor genes on chromosome 7 and is linked to loci influencing bitter perception. It acts as a gustducin-coupled receptor for denatonium and N(6)-propyl-2-thiouracil, implicated in bitter compound perception in the oral cavity and gastrointestinal tract. Signals through PLCB2 and TRPM5 channels, expressed in gustducin-positive taste receptor cells.
