Target Information
Laminins are extracellular matrix glycoproteins that form a major component of basement membranes. They are involved in cell adhesion, differentiation, migration, signaling, neurite outgrowth, and metastasis. Laminin effects are mediated through interactions with cell surface receptors, including integrins and non-integrin laminin-binding proteins.
This gene encodes a high-affinity, non-integrin family laminin receptor 1, also known as:
- 67 kDa laminin receptor
- 37 kDa laminin receptor precursor (37LRP)
- p40 ribosome-associated protein
The amino acid sequence of laminin receptor 1 is highly conserved, indicating an essential biological function. Elevated expression has been observed in colon carcinoma and lung cancer cell lines, correlating with invasive and metastatic phenotypes. Multiple pseudogenes exist, likely derived from retropositional events. Two alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding the same protein have been identified.
