Target Information
The protein encoded by the ABCC5 gene belongs to the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter superfamily. These proteins transport various molecules across cellular membranes and are divided into seven subfamilies: ABC1, MDR/TAP, MRP, ALD, OABP, GCN20, and White.
ABCC5 is a member of the MRP subfamily, which is associated with multidrug resistance. It functions in the export of cyclic nucleotides, contributing to their degradation and elimination. Studies indicate that ABCC5 provides resistance to thiopurine anticancer drugs (6-mercaptopurine and thioguanine) and the anti-HIV drug 9-(2-phosphonylmethoxyethyl)adenine. It may play a role in resistance mechanisms in acute lymphoblastic leukemia and HIV-infected patients.
Alternative splicing of this gene has been observed, though the complete sequence and translation initiation site remain unclear.
