Target Information
Two distinct signaling pathways activate host innate immunity against viral infection. One pathway relies on members of the Toll-like receptor (TLR) family, while the other uses RNA helicase RIG-I as a receptor for intracellular viral double-stranded RNA. MAVS is a mitochondrial membrane protein critical for IFN beta signaling, recruiting IRF-3 to RIG-I, leading to activation of NF-kappa-B. MAVS interacts with TLR adapter protein TRIF, TRAF2, TRAF6, and kinases IKK-alpha, IKK-beta, and IKK-iota. Cleavage of its C-terminal region by Hepatitis C virus protease allows viral immune evasion. Multiple isoforms of MAVS are known.
