Target Information
Calcitonin is a 32 amino acid peptide present in C cells of the normal and hyperplastic thyroid. Staining for calcitonin may aid in identifying C cell proliferative abnormalities, ranging from hyperplasia to invasive tumors. In medullary carcinoma of the thyroid, calcitonin staining shows a fine granular cytoplasmic pattern, and amyloid deposits may also exhibit calcitonin activity.
