Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and play a role in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes. Mammalian mitoribosomes lack 5S rRNA. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome differ significantly among species, affecting sequence homology recognition. The MRPS26 gene encodes a 28S subunit protein and is located adjacent to the gonadotropin-releasing hormone precursor gene.
