Target Information
Synaptophysin is a calcium-binding integral membrane glycoprotein located in presynaptic vesicles of nearly all neurons. It possesses four transmembrane domains and forms a complex with dynamin under high calcium conditions, suggesting a role in synaptic vesicle endocytosis. Additionally, Synaptophysin participates in the regulation of short- and long-term synaptic plasticity. It is widely used as a marker for nerve terminals and for differentiating neuroendocrine tumors. Mutations in the gene are associated with X-linked mental retardation.
