Target Information
The protein encoded by the BCL-X gene belongs to the BCL-2 protein family. Members of this family form hetero- or homodimers and act as anti- or pro-apoptotic regulators involved in various cellular activities. These proteins are located at the outer mitochondrial membrane and regulate the opening of the voltage-dependent anion channel (VDAC). VDAC controls mitochondrial membrane potential, production of reactive oxygen species, and release of cytochrome C, all of which are key factors in apoptosis induction. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding two isoforms: the longer isoform acts as an apoptotic inhibitor, whereas the shorter isoform functions as an apoptotic activator.
