Target Information
Interferon alpha (IFN-alpha) is a Type I interferon that belongs to a family of structurally related, species-specific proteins found only in vertebrates. Interaction of IFN-alpha with its receptor activates several signaling pathways involved in innate immune responses against viral infections. In humans, the IFN-alpha gene is located on chromosome 9 and includes 14 alpha isoforms, as well as beta, omega, epsilon, and kappa isoforms. Homologous molecules exist across many species, including mammals, birds, reptiles, and fish. IFN-alpha is primarily produced by plasmacytoid dendritic cells and plays a critical role in antiviral defense and modulation of adaptive immunity. Dysregulation of IFN-alpha is associated with diseases such as Hepatitis C and Hepatitis.
