Target Information
The COL1A1 gene encodes the pro-alpha1 chain of type I collagen, a fibril-forming collagen found in most connective tissues and abundant in bone, cornea, dermis, and tendon. Mutations in this gene are associated with:
- Osteogenesis imperfecta types I–IV
- Ehlers-Danlos syndrome type VIIA and Classical type
- Caffey Disease
- Idiopathic osteoporosis
Reciprocal translocations between chromosomes 17 and 22, involving COL1A1 and the PDGFB gene, are linked to dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans due to unregulated growth factor expression. Two transcripts have been identified for this gene, resulting from alternate polyadenylation signals.
