Target Information
Interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) is a proinflammatory cytokine expressed by monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. It is synthesized as a 31 kDa inactive pro-form and cleaved into a 17 kDa active form upon inflammasome activation. This activation involves caspase-1, which processes pro-IL-1β into its mature, active form. IL-1β lacks a signal peptide and is secreted via a non-classical pathway. It signals through IL-1RI and IL-1RII receptors, shared with IL-1α, and its activity can be inhibited by IL-1 Receptor Antagonist (IL-1RA). IL-1β plays a central role in inflammation and innate immunity, with elevated levels linked to chronic inflammatory diseases.
