Target Information

Nucleocytoplasmic transport is a signal- and energy-dependent process that occurs through nuclear pore complexes embedded in the nuclear envelope. Proteins containing a nuclear localization signal require the NLS import receptor, a heterodimer of importin alpha and beta subunits (karyopherins). Importin alpha binds the NLS-containing cargo in the cytoplasm, while importin beta docks the complex at the cytoplasmic side of the nuclear pore complex. In the presence of nucleoside triphosphates and Ran GTPase, the complex translocates into the nucleus, where importin subunits dissociate. Importin alpha enters the nucleoplasm with its cargo, and importin beta remains at the pore. Interactions between importin beta and FG repeats of nucleoporins are essential for translocation. The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the importin beta family.
