Target Information
Nucleocytoplasmic transport is a signal- and energy-dependent process that occurs through nuclear pore complexes embedded in the nuclear envelope. Proteins containing a nuclear localization signal (NLS) require the importin alpha/beta receptor complex (karyopherins) for transport. Importin alpha binds the NLS-containing cargo, while importin beta mediates docking at the nuclear pore complex. In the presence of nucleoside triphosphates and Ran GTPase, the complex translocates through the pore, and importin subunits dissociate. Importin alpha enters the nucleoplasm with the cargo, while importin beta remains at the pore. Interactions between importin beta and FG-repeat nucleoporins are essential for this process. The encoded protein belongs to the importin beta family.
