Target Information
Alpha Tubulin is a part of a heterodimer consisting of alpha and beta tubulin subunits. The alpha and beta tubulins, each about 55 kDa, are homologous but not identical. The alpha-beta tubulin heterodimer forms the basic building block of microtubules, which are intracellular cylindrical filamentous structures present in almost all eukaryotic cells.
Microtubules serve as structural supports and transport pathways within the cell and play a key role in mitosis. They perform essential and diverse functions as part of the eukaryotic cytoskeleton. Gamma tubulin is critical for microtubule nucleation. Multiple alpha and beta tubulin genes exist and are highly conserved among species. The alpha tubulin gene is highly similar to the mouse and rat Tuba1 gene. Northern blotting studies indicate predominant expression in morphologically differentiated neurologic cells.
