Target Information

This gene encodes a DNA-binding protein with high specificity for scaffold or matrix attachment region DNA elements (S/MAR DNA). It is thought to anchor chromatin loops to the nuclear matrix, although evidence is mixed regarding its exact role. Scaffold attachment factors form a subset of nuclear matrix proteins that bind S/MAR sequences. The encoded protein may serve as a molecular base for assembling a transcriptosome complex near actively transcribed genes. It regulates heat shock protein 27 transcription, acts as an estrogen receptor co-repressor, and is implicated in breast tumorigenesis. The gene is arranged head-to-head with a similar gene encoding a protein of comparable function. Multiple transcript variants exist.
