Target Information
Human Rap1 is the first identified ortholog of the yeast telomeric protein scRap1, sharing three conserved sequence motifs. hRap1 is localized at telomeres and influences telomere length by being recruited via TRF2, rather than directly binding telomeric DNA.
The hRap1 cDNA encodes a 399-amino-acid protein (~47 kDa) that does not interact with TRF1. TRF2, a ubiquitously expressed protein, binds duplex TTAGGG repeats and localizes to all human telomeres. It maintains telomere structure and prevents senescence. Inhibition of TRF2 can induce apoptosis in certain mammalian cells.
