Target Information
Human Rap1 was the first identified ortholog of the yeast telomeric protein scRap1, sharing three conserved sequence motifs. hRap1 is located at telomeres and influences telomere length by being recruited by TRF2 rather than directly binding to telomeres. The hRap1 cDNA encodes a 399 amino acid protein (~47 kDa). hRap1 does not interact with TRF1. TRF2, a ubiquitously expressed protein, helps control telomere length and protects chromosome ends by maintaining telomere structure. Mutant forms of TRF2 have been linked to cellular senescence prevention, and TRF2 inhibition can induce apoptosis in some mammalian cells.
