Background
Olfactory receptor family 8 subfamily D member 4 (OR8D4) is an olfactory receptor that interacts with odorant molecules in the nose, initiating a neuronal response responsible for the perception of smell. These receptors belong to the large family of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) derived from single coding-exon genes. They share a 7-transmembrane domain structure with many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors and mediate odorant signal transduction via G proteins. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the human genome. The nomenclature for olfactory receptor genes and proteins is organism-specific. (RefSeq, Jul 2008)
