Background
Olfactory receptor family 6 subfamily B member 1 (OR6B1) is a human olfactory receptor that interacts with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate a neuronal response responsible for smell perception. These receptors belong to the large family of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCR) derived from single coding-exon genes. They share a seven-transmembrane domain structure common to many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors, mediating recognition and G protein–mediated transduction of odorant signals. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the human genome, and its nomenclature is independent across species.
