Background
Olfactory receptors interact with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate a neuronal response that triggers the perception of smell. These receptors belong to a large family of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCR) encoded by single-exon genes. They share a seven-transmembrane domain structure common to many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors and are responsible for odorant recognition and G protein-mediated signal transduction. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the human genome. The nomenclature for olfactory receptor genes and proteins in this organism is independent of other species.
