Background
Olfactory receptor family 2 subfamily V member 2 (OR2V2) is a human olfactory receptor that interacts with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate a neuronal response responsible for smell perception. These olfactory receptor proteins belong to a large family of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) arising from single coding-exon genes. They share a seven-transmembrane domain structure with many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors, mediating recognition and G protein–mediated transduction of odorant signals. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the human genome. The nomenclature assigned to these genes and proteins is independent across species. (RefSeq, Jul 2008)
