Background
Olfactory receptor family 1 subfamily J member 2 (OR1J2) is a human olfactory receptor that interacts with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate a neuronal response responsible for smell perception. These receptors belong to a large family of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) derived from single coding-exon genes. They share a seven-transmembrane domain structure with many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors and mediate odorant signal transduction via G proteins. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the human genome, and its nomenclature is organism-specific. (RefSeq, Jul 2008)
