Target Information
This gene product is a chymotryptic serine proteinase belonging to the peptidase family S1. It is expressed in mast cells and functions in the degradation of the extracellular matrix, regulation of submucosal gland secretion, and generation of vasoactive peptides.
In the cardiovascular system, this protein converts angiotensin I to angiotensin II, contributing to blood pressure regulation and the pathogenesis of hypertension, cardiac hypertrophy, and heart failure.
The gene maps to 14q11.2 in a cluster encoding other proteases.
