Target Information
The steroid 11beta-hydroxylase gene (CYP11B1) is a marker for functional differentiation of cells in the zonae fasciculata reticularis.
The deduced CYP11B1 protein (466 amino acids) includes a secretory signal, EGF-like repeats, and a proteolytically inactive cathepsin B-related sequence.
Human aldosterone synthase (CYP11B2) is related and involved in substrate recognition and conversion.
A chimeric gene duplication between CYP11B1 and CYP11B2 causes glucocorticoid-remediable aldosteronism, characterized by hyperaldosteronism and elevated 18-hydroxycortisol and 18-oxocortisol under ACTH control.
