Target Information

Influenza A virus is a major public health threat, responsible for more than 30,000 deaths annually in the USA. In early 2009, a novel swine-origin influenza A (H1N1) virus was identified in Mexico and the United States, leading to a global pandemic declared by WHO on June 11, 2009.
The virus possesses one of sixteen Hemagglutinin (HA) and one of nine Neuraminidase (NA) surface proteins. HA mediates viral attachment, while NA facilitates viral release. Both proteins elicit immune responses that help prevent infection or reduce viral replication.
The genetic composition of this H1N1 strain includes human, swine, and avian influenza elements combined with Eurasian pig H3N2 genes, resulting in distinct antigenic properties compared to seasonal influenza. Human immunity against the new swine influenza virus is limited, though some protection is observed in older populations.
