Target Information

Slc1a6 encodes a glutamate transporter, also known as an excitatory amino acid transporter (EAAT). These are sodium- and potassium-dependent members of the solute carrier family 6 (SLC1) and are widely distributed throughout the brain. There are five EAAT subtypes, each with specific distributions.

SLC1A6 functions as a sodium-dependent, high-affinity transporter mediating uptake of L-glutamate, L-aspartate, and D-aspartate. It operates as a symporter, co-transporting one amino acid molecule with two or three Na⁺ ions and one proton, while counter-transporting one K⁺ ion. It also mediates Cl⁻ flux to prevent negative charge accumulation during transport. SLC1A6 plays a role in rapid glutamate removal from the synaptic cleft, crucial for terminating postsynaptic glutamate action. Diseases associated with SLC1A6 include Dicarboxylic Aminoaciduria.
