Target Information
RARA (Retinoic Acid Receptor Alpha) is a receptor for retinoic acid. It forms heterodimers with RXR to bind retinoic acid response elements (RARE) and regulates gene expression in response to all-trans or 9-cis retinoic acid.
In the absence of ligand, RXR-RAR heterodimers associate with corepressors leading to chromatin condensation and transcriptional suppression. Upon ligand binding, corepressors dissociate and coactivators are recruited, resulting in transcriptional activation.
RARA is essential for retinoic acid-induced germ cell development during spermatogenesis, supports early spermatocyte survival, and contributes to skeletal growth and matrix homeostasis in cooperation with RARG. It also mediates retinoic acid-induced granulopoiesis.
