Target Information

Transferrins (Tf) are approximately 80 kDa blood plasma glycoproteins synthesized by the liver. They are iron-binding transport proteins that can bind two Fe³⁺ ions along with an anion, typically bicarbonate. Transferrin is responsible for transporting iron from absorption and degradation sites to storage and utilization sites. It is the primary blood iron transport protein, with about one-third of total transferrin normally bound to iron. Measurement of transferrin levels serves as an indicator of iron-carrying capacity and abnormalities in iron metabolism such as anemia, iron overload, and hemochromatosis. Serum transferrin may also play a role in stimulating cell proliferation.
