Target Information
In response to environmental stress, cells increase expression of heat shock proteins (HSPs). HSPB1 (heat shock protein beta-1 or HSP27) is a small heat shock protein acting as a molecular chaperone to maintain denatured proteins in a folding-competent state. It contributes to stress resistance and actin organization, and regulates phosphorylation and axonal transport of neurofilament proteins. Mutations in HSPB1 can lead to Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 2F and distal hereditary motor neuronopathy type 2B.
