FTH1은 ferritin의 heavy subunit으로, 세포 내 철 저장 단백질의 주요 구성 요소입니다. Ferritin은 heavy 및 light chain의 24개 소단위로 구성되어 있으며, 조직에 따라 철의 흡수 및 방출 속도에 영향을 줄 수 있습니다. 주요 기능은 철을 용해성이고 무독성 상태로 저장하는 것입니다. Ferritin 단백질의 결함은 여러 신경퇴행성 질환과 관련이 있으며, 이 유전자는 다수의 유사 유전자를 가지고 있습니다. 여러 대체 스플라이싱 전사 변이가 보고되었으나, 그 생물학적 유효성은 아직 명확히 규명되지 않았습니다.
