Target Information
Smooth Muscle Actin belongs to the actin family of proteins, which are highly conserved and play a key role in cell motility, structure, and integrity.
Alpha, beta, and gamma actin isoforms have been identified:
- Alpha actin: major constituent of the contractile apparatus
- Beta and gamma actins: involved in the regulation of cell motility
Smooth muscle actin is an alpha actin found in skeletal muscle and is a ubiquitous protein forming part of the cytoskeleton.
Actin filaments interact with myosin to assist in muscle contraction, cell motility, and cytokinesis.
It is located in smooth muscle vessel walls, gut wall, myometrium, and myoepithelial cells of breast and salivary glands.
Defects in the smooth muscle actin gene cause familial thoracic aortic aneurysm type 6.
Alpha-smooth muscle actin is abundant in vascular and visceral smooth muscle cells and appears in stress fibers of fibroblastic cells during wound healing and fibrocontractive diseases.
Multiple alternatively spliced variants of smooth muscle actin have been identified.
