Target Information
This gene encodes glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD), a cytosolic enzyme encoded by a housekeeping X-linked gene. Its main function is to produce NADPH, a key electron donor in defense against oxidative stress and in reductive biosynthetic reactions.
G6PD exhibits significant genetic diversity, with many variants arising from missense mutations, resulting in a wide range of enzyme activities and clinical outcomes.
Deficiency in G6PD can cause neonatal jaundice, acute hemolysis, or chronic non-spherocytic hemolytic anemia. Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
