Product Specific Information

Alpha interferons are involved in virus resistance in target cells, blocking cell proliferation and regulating MHC class I antigen expression. The IFNα family comprises over 20 genes and pseudogenes divided into two families, one with a mature length of 166 amino acids and one of 172 amino acids.
Cells producing IFNα include lymphocytes, monocytes, macrophages, and cell lines such as Namalwa and KGI. Bioassays for IFNα involve cytopathic effect blocking by viruses such as VSV, SFV, and BMCV.
N39 is specific for human IFNα2 and does not cross-react with human IFNα1. It is directed against the immunodominant epitope site I (aa112–148).

Target Information

IFN alpha (Interferon alpha) is a Type I interferon belonging to a family of structurally related, species-specific proteins found only in vertebrates. Interaction with its receptor activates signaling pathways involved in innate immune responses against viral infection.
In humans, the IFN alpha gene is located on chromosome 9. Type I interferons include 14 alpha isoforms and single beta, omega, epsilon, and kappa isoforms. Homologous molecules are found in many species, including mammals, birds, reptiles, and fish.
IFN alpha is primarily produced by plasmacytoid dendritic cells and plays a key role in antiviral innate immunity and modulation of adaptive immune responses.
Diseases associated with IFN alpha dysfunction include Hepatitis C and Hepatitis.
