Target Information
Ferritin is the major intracellular iron storage protein found in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes. It comprises 24 subunits of heavy (H) and light (L) chains.
Variation in subunit composition may affect iron uptake and release rates in different tissues.
Ferritin stores iron in a soluble, nontoxic form, playing a crucial role in iron homeostasis.
Defects in the light chain ferritin gene are associated with neurodegenerative diseases and hyperferritinemia-cataract syndrome.
The ferritin holoenzyme has a molecular weight of about 450 kDa and can store up to 4,500 atoms of ferric iron.
