Target Information
Carbonic anhydrases are a large family of zinc metalloenzymes that catalyze the reversible hydration of carbon dioxide. They are involved in numerous biological processes, including respiration, calcification, acid-base balance, bone resorption, and the formation of aqueous humor, cerebrospinal fluid, saliva, and gastric acid. These enzymes exhibit extensive diversity in tissue distribution and subcellular localization.
The CA7 gene encodes a glycosylphosphatidylinositol-anchored membrane isozyme expressed on the luminal surfaces of pulmonary capillaries and proximal renal tubules. Although its precise function remains unclear, it may play a role in inherited renal abnormalities related to bicarbonate transport.
