Target Information
Calpains are a well-conserved family of calcium-dependent cysteine proteases. They form heterodimers consisting of a small invariant subunit and variable large subunits. The large subunit contains a cysteine protease domain, while both subunits have calcium-binding domains. Calpains are implicated in neurodegenerative processes and can be activated by calcium influx and oxidative stress.
Calpain 9 is primarily expressed in the stomach and small intestine, potentially playing specialized roles in the digestive tract. It has been associated with gastric cancer. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
