Target Information
SPACA3 (sperm acrosome associated 3), also known as sperm lysozyme-like protein 1, lysozyme-like protein 3, ALLP-17, CT54, LYC3, SPRASA, or LYZL3, is a 215 amino acid protein involved in sperm-egg membrane adhesion and fusion during fertilization.
Identified as a novel cancer/testis antigen in hematologic malignancies, SPACA3 can elicit B-cell immune responses in cancer patients and is considered a potential immunotherapy target.
A member of the glycosyl hydrolase 22 family, SPACA3 is expressed in testis, placenta, and epididymis, existing as two alternatively spliced isoforms:
- Isoform 1: Single-pass type II membrane protein of the sperm acrosome
- Isoform 2: Secreted protein
SPACA3 may act as a receptor for the egg oligosaccharide residue N-acetylglucosamine, aiding sperm-egg fusion. The processed form shows no detectable bacteriolytic activity in vitro.
