Target Information
ALDH1A1 belongs to the aldehyde dehydrogenase family of proteins. It is the second enzyme in the major oxidative pathway of alcohol metabolism. Two major liver isoforms—cytosolic and mitochondrial—are distinguished by electrophoretic mobility, kinetic properties, and subcellular localization. Most Caucasians have both isoforms, while about 50% of Orientals have only the cytosolic isozyme, lacking the mitochondrial form. This difference may relate to the higher frequency of acute alcohol intoxication among Orientals.
